This time we\u2019ll be delving into the emergence of gin-based drink names. During my bartending days a common response we gave to underspecified requests for custom cocktails was, \u201cwould you like something spirit-forward or citrussy?\u201d If the customer chose the former, we\u2019d mix them a drink with distilled liquids and liqueurs only. If it was the latter, we\u2019d include juice (most often lemon, lime, or grapefruit) and potentially other non-alcoholic mixers (syrups, infusions, sodas). As a little homage to that question, I\u2019m including a balance here \u2013 the below exploration has two \u201cspirit-based\u201d elixirs, and two \u201cjuicy\u201d ones.<\/p>\n<p>As with the last post, each cocktail has an etymological description and quote of first attested use from the Oxford English Dictionary (OED). There\u2019s also a recipe based on those we used at my last bar.<\/p>\n<p><strong>GIN<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-187\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/linguamonium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/gimlet_sethanderson_flickr_cropped.jpg?resize=217%2C169&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Gimlet_SethAnderson_Flickr_cropped\" width=\"217\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/linguamonium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/gimlet_sethanderson_flickr_cropped.jpg?w=462&amp;ssl=1 462w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/linguamonium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/gimlet_sethanderson_flickr_cropped.jpg?resize=300%2C234&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 217px) 100vw, 217px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Gimlet<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The OED states that 1928 was the first print reference for this versatile gin potable. In D. B. Wesson\u2019s <em>I\u2019ll never be Cured<\/em>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">\u201cThe \u2018Gimlet\u2019 we were introduced to..at the Golf Club: and it proved to be the well and flavorably known ricky, but described as \u2018gin, a spot of lime, and soda\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, the drink, along with its name, almost certainly came to be several decades earlier. There are at least two hypotheses concerning its etymology. <em>Gimlet <\/em>may derive from a tool of the same name, used for drilling small holes and tapping casks \u2013 since the cocktail had similar \u2018piercing\u2019 or \u2018penetrating\u2019 effects on its drinker.<a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a> The Dictionary reports that this tool term comes from Old French <em>guimbelet<\/em> (modern French <em>gibelet<\/em>). Alternatively, <em>gimlet<\/em> might be named after British Navy Surgeon Thomas Gimlette, who, starting in the 1870s, was said to have dosed his sailors\u2019 gin with lime cordial to help combat scurvy on extended sea voyages.<a href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\">[2]<\/a><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Recipe<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Add to shaker tin:\n<ul>\n<li>0.75 oz simple syrup<\/li>\n<li>0.75 oz fresh-squeezed lime juice<\/li>\n<li>1.5 oz gin (for dryer, I recommend Plymouth or Aviation; for botanical, St. George Terroir or Uncle Val\u2019s)\n<ul>\n<li>Use 2 oz gin if you like it a bit stronger<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Add ice, shake, then double-strain into coupe\/cocktail glass<\/li>\n<li>Garnish with lime wheel, wedge, or peel<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-188\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/linguamonium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/martini_jenconsalvo_flickr_cropped.jpg?resize=167%2C152&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Martini_JenConsalvo_Flickr_cropped\" width=\"167\" height=\"152\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/linguamonium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/martini_jenconsalvo_flickr_cropped.jpg?w=466&amp;ssl=1 466w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/linguamonium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/martini_jenconsalvo_flickr_cropped.jpg?resize=300%2C273&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 167px) 100vw, 167px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Martini<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Can you imagine a time before what seems like the most classic of all cocktails? According to the OED, one of the earliest mentions of this spirituous beverage is 1887, in the <em>Brooklyn Daily Eagle<\/em>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">\u201cSample the bewildering depths of the \u2018Martini cocktail\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Oxford English Dictionary reveals that the drink was first called a <em>Martinez<\/em>, likely taken from the name of a western California city where the libation is thought to have originated. The name twisted into its current form after the arrival of Italian liquor manufacturers <em>Martini e Rossi <\/em>(who applied for U.S. trademark in 1882); the company\u2019s dry white vermouth was an integral part of this simple cocktail.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Recipe<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Add to mixing glass then stir with ice:\n<ul>\n<li>0.5 oz dry white vermouth (I recommend Lo-Fi Dry, Vya Extra Dry, or Dolin Dry)<\/li>\n<li>2.5 oz gin (for dryer, I recommend Plymouth or Aviation; for botanical, St. George Terroir or Uncle Val\u2019s)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Strain into coupe\/cocktail glass<\/li>\n<li>Garnish with olives or lemon peel, per preference<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-189\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/linguamonium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/negroni_snug_cropped.jpg?resize=165%2C203&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"negroni_snug_cropped\" width=\"165\" height=\"203\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Negroni<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Another strong but refreshing gin concoction is this vermillion delight. We initially hear about it (per the OED) in 1947, in the <em>Coshocton Tribune <\/em>(Ohio):<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">\u201cOrson Welles, working in \u2018Cagliostro\u2019 in Rome, writes that he&#8217;s discovered a new drink there\u2014Negronis. It&#8217;s made of gin, Italian vermouth and Campari bitters. \u2018The bitters are excellent for your liver, the gin is bad for you. They balance each other.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you hadn\u2019t already guessed, the word stems from Italian. The OED asserts that it was \u201cthe name of Count Camillo <em>Negroni<\/em>, the Italian aristocrat who is believed to have invented the drink in the 1930s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Negronis pair well with a Saturday afternoon, a hot sun, and an outdoor caf\u00e9.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Recipe<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Add to mixing glass then stir with ice:\n<ul>\n<li>1 oz dry gin (I recommend Plymouth or Aviation)<\/li>\n<li>1 oz red vermouth (I recommend Punt E Mes or Carpano Antica)<\/li>\n<li>1 oz Campari<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Strain into coupe\/cocktail glass or rocks glass (add ice if desired)<\/li>\n<li>Garnish by spritzing orange peel over top of glass to add its oils; add peel to drink<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-190\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/linguamonium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/corpse_reviver_2_wikimedia_cropped.jpg?resize=164%2C166&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Corpse_Reviver_2_Wikimedia_cropped\" width=\"164\" height=\"166\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/linguamonium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/corpse_reviver_2_wikimedia_cropped.jpg?w=841&amp;ssl=1 841w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/linguamonium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/corpse_reviver_2_wikimedia_cropped.jpg?resize=297%2C300&amp;ssl=1 297w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/linguamonium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/corpse_reviver_2_wikimedia_cropped.jpg?resize=768%2C775&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 164px) 100vw, 164px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Corpse Reviver (#2)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Despite its disturbing name, the Corpse Reviver #2 is juicy and tart, with a smidgeon of absinthe adding lip-smacking complexity. The Oxford English Dictionary gives us this quote from the <em>Birmingham Daily Post <\/em>in 1871:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">\u201cAnd our American refreshment bars, In drinks of all descriptions cut a dash, From corpse revivers down to \u2018brandy smash\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wikipedia cites an even earlier reference \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=zpBIAAAAYAAJ&amp;lpg=RA1-PA247&amp;ots=L5wxg7vKla&amp;pg=RA1-PA247#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a mention in the magazine <em>Punch, or The London Charivari<\/em><\/a>\u00a0in 1861:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">\u201c[\u2026] that \u2018officer of the Government\u2019 expectorated twice with a marked gaiety of manner, and after liquoring up a Sling, a Stone Wall, and a Corpse-Reviver, he merrily danced forth into the middle of the room, and sang a pleasant song with an agreeable <em>refrain:<\/em> \u2013\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Both sources could in fact be writing about the Corpse Reviver #1, a very different recipe (with cognac, calvados, and sweet vermouth) but who knows. No. 2 has been a much more popular request during our modern-day cocktail renaissance. Both 1 and 2 are informally known as hangover remedies, which was probably motivation for the name.
