{"id":950,"date":"2024-05-31T11:56:15","date_gmt":"2024-05-31T18:56:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/linguamonium.com\/?p=950"},"modified":"2024-05-31T11:56:15","modified_gmt":"2024-05-31T18:56:15","slug":"a-whirlwind-tour-of-linguistics-and-linguists-in-tech","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/linguamonium.com\/?p=950","title":{"rendered":"A Whirlwind Tour of Linguistics and Linguists in Tech"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At the beginning of May I presented a talk at an event called \u201cAVL Tech Connect,\u201d which is a monthly occurrence of the <a href=\"https:\/\/avldigitalnomads.org\/\">AVL Digital Nomads<\/a> group (a wonderful community that I\u2019ve joined here in Asheville, NC). The presentation was well-received, and I thought I\u2019d share it with the wider internet.<\/p>\n<p>Linguists bring unique qualifications to areas like natural language processing (NLP), natural language understanding (NLU), and AI. acoustic aspects).<\/li>\n<li>A \u201cphoneme\u201d is the smallest unit of speech that distinguishes one word or word element from another in a particular language.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><u>Morphology:<\/u><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A \u201cmorpheme\u201d is the smallest unit of language that has its own meaning (either a word or a part of a word).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-955 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/linguamonium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Slide5.jpg?resize=640%2C360&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/linguamonium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Slide5.jpg?resize=300%2C169&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/linguamonium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Slide5.jpg?resize=1024%2C576&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/linguamonium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Slide5.jpg?resize=768%2C432&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/linguamonium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Slide5.jpg?w=1280&amp;ssl=1 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p><u>Syntax<\/u><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Images: The white \u201ctree\u201d is a constituency syntax parse tree; the dark grey image is a dependency syntax parse. The sentence parsed in both, since it&#8217;s probably very hard to read from there, is \u201cmy parakeet drinks mimosas in the morning.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/linguamonium.com\/?p=240\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dependency and constituency parsers have been used in NLP for some time<\/a>, but are now being replaced (or used in conjunction with) neural net \/ deep learning-based parsers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><u>Semantics<\/u><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Within this domain, there\u2019s lexical semantics (the study of word meaning) and sentential or phrasal semantics (the study of phrase\/sentence meaning, including propositional logic).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><u>Pragmatics<\/u><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Another common example folks like to use: When you\u2019re sitting at the dinner table and your friend says \u201cCan you pass the salt?\u201d you know that she\u2019s making a request, not asking about your physical capability to perform the action.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-957 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/linguamonium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Slide7.jpg?resize=640%2C361&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"361\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/linguamonium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Slide7.jpg?resize=300%2C169&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/linguamonium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Slide7.jpg?resize=1024%2C576&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/linguamonium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Slide7.jpg?resize=768%2C432&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/linguamonium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Slide7.jpg?w=1280&amp;ssl=1 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p><u>Traditionally<\/u><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Linguistics has fused with many of its related disciplines to create specialties like Psycholinguistics, Cognitive Linguistics, Sociolinguistics, and Neurolinguistics.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><u>Recent shift<\/u><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>This timeframe and these observations are just impressionistic (based on my experience) \u2013 I haven\u2019t researched the actual trends to confirm, but I have seen them first-hand.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-958 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/linguamonium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Slide8.jpg?resize=640%2C361&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"361\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/linguamonium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Slide8.jpg?resize=300%2C169&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/linguamonium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Slide8.jpg?resize=1024%2C576&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/linguamonium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Slide8.jpg?resize=768%2C432&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/linguamonium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Slide8.jpg?w=1280&amp;ssl=1 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Even more titles similar to \u201cAnalytical Linguist\u201d: AI Linguist, Data Specialist, Language Engineer, Language Scientist<\/li>\n<li>Note: Basically, FAANG (Facebook\/Meta, Amazon, Apple, Netflix, and Google) + Microsoft and other tech giants employ all of the first 3 types of people, but they\u2019re not listed for every one in order to not be redundant \u2013 and to show that other companies outside of big tech also employ linguists.<\/li>\n<li>A few good articles on Knowledge Graphs (KGs) and ontologies, if you\u2019d like to learn more:\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"\u2022%09https:\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/whats-knowledge-graph-mike-dillinger-phd-xedjc\/?trackingId=PA7ecgxsS7iCmZB6cCi8mA%3D%3D\">What\u2019s a Knowledge Graph? (A): [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.surgehq.ai\/blog\/30-percent-of-googles-reddit-emotions-dataset-is-mislabeled\">Article link<\/a>] Google\u2019s \u201cGoEmotions\u201d dataset: A human-labeled dataset of 58K Reddit comments categorized according to 27 emotions.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Built for use in chatbots, for task of suggesting emojis in conversational text, improved customer support interactions<\/li>\n<li>Missed idioms, sarcasm, profanity, basic English, US politics &amp; culture, Reddit memes<\/li>\n<li>Problem #1: Comments presented with no extra metadata<\/li>\n<li>Problem #2: \u201cAll raters are native English speakers from India\u201d \u2013 unfamiliar with US English &amp; culture (esp. Reddit culture)<\/li>\n<li>&#8211;&gt; Underscores the importance of accurate data labeling, and the importance of the data labelers&#8217; knowledge of <em>context<\/em> for the data (see also next slide).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Ex. (B): The \u201cSet goals\u201d image presents options from Grammarly\u2019s AI writing assistant for the user.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Another example of verbosity issues in this space: ChatGPTs have a very verbose, super polite but also pedantic register\/style that bothers many users (likely due to reinforcement learning). They found that the path of processing through the layers almost always passes via what they call the English subspace. If asked to translate Chinese to Russian, the correct Russian characters travel through the English subspace, before going back to Russian\u201d<\/li>\n<li>(A): Another lexical-semantic problem example is how languages carve up the spatial domain.
